Overview
The Desktop Technician at Vancouver Film School (VFS) provides essential technical support and troubleshooting expertise to faculty, staff, and students, ensuring smooth and secure operation of all desktop systems and associated hardware. This role focuses on managing and resolving IT issues, deploying and maintaining hardware and software, and supporting the daily technology needs of VFS's fast-paced, creative environment. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the IT team to implement updates, maintain security protocols, and assist with event setups, contributing to a seamless user experience across campus. This position is ideal for a technically skilled, solutions-oriented individual who values customer service and thrives in a dynamic, educational setting.
Core Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities • Technical Support and Troubleshooting • Provide timely desktop support to staff and students, resolving hardware and software issues on-site and remotely. • Diagnose and troubleshoot system errors, connectivity issues, software malfunctions, and hardware failures. • Respond to user inquiries through ticketing systems, maintaining accurate documentation of issues and solutions. Hardware and Software Maintenance • Install, configure, and upgrade desktop systems, laptops, peripherals, and authorized software applications. • Conduct routine maintenance, updates, and optimization of desktops to ensure smooth operations. • Coordinate with IT for software licensing and renewals, ensuring compliance with VFS policies. Asset Management • Maintain an inventory of all hardware and software assets, tracking deployment and retrieval to prevent loss. • Work with the People & Culture and Facilities teams to deploy and collect/recall IT equipment Network and Security Compliance • Ensure desktop systems comply with VFS's IT security protocols, including password policies, encryption, and anti-virus measures. Support for Events and Presentations • Assist in setting up IT and AV equipment for school events, presentations, and training sessions as needed • Provide technical assistance during events, ensuring equipment functions smoothly throughout. Collaboration with IT and Facilities • Work closely with the IT department to escalate advanced issues and support broader IT projects, such as system upgrades or network enhancements. • Coordinate with Facilities for workstation setups, moves, or any changes to physical workspace that impact IT equipment. This role requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and strong customer service skills, as the Desktop Technician is critical to the seamless functioning of staff and student technology at VFS.
Job Qualifications
Skills • Proficiency in Windows operating systems is essential, secondary systems would be an asset. • Experience with firewall management and network security protocols. • Strong background in help desk support and desktop support functions. • Excellent software troubleshooting skills across various applications. • Familiarity with VPN technologies and configurations. • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical users. • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. • Experience with ticketing systems such as Remedy is a plus.
